Overlooking the valley of the Battenkill, our school and camp programs are located on the grounds of Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home. Hildene is a 412 acre estate with a stately 24-room Georgian Revival mansion built by Robert Lincoln, the eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln.

Congratulations to the 2017 Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition winners! We received entries from 153 applicants statewide. Three winners and ten honorable mentions were chosen. If you are one of the applicants, whether or not your essay garnered an award, we appreciate the time and effort you put into grappling with this year’s timely prompt on climate change. All applicants will receive a letter of thanks from Hildene, along with guest passes and a gift certificate.

This year’s topic elicited an array of fascinating, thought-provoking suggestions. You can view that list here. The judges were not only impressed with the level of engagement from Vermont’s eighth graders, but several have also expressed how inspired they now are to pursue some of the ideas put forth in the essays. Never doubt for a moment that your efforts have been for naught! You are making a difference and we all applaud you for it.
